Working Locally: Skye Weavers

Perle Hotels are passionate about providing an authentic experience to its guests and in a tourist world of clichéd destination hotels it’s sometimes difficult for even an informed observer to identify true authenticity from manufactured imitations. The thread of authenticity needs to run through an entire narrative; the ingredients sourced from an amazing local and regional Scottish larder through to the very fabrics and items that decorate the walls and line the shelves of a building.

We are starting our journey by sharing the wonderful work and stories of others whom we have been lucky enough to collaborate with and to begin this series we are delighted to introduce bicycle-powered Skye Weavers.

Skye Weavers started their journey in 2012 when they swapped their home on the Isle of Mull and moved into the old family croft house in Glendale, Isle of Skye. The inspiration for their business came from living and working at Ardalanish, an organic farm and weaving mill on Mull, where Roger worked as the farm manager and Andrea was involved in designing and sewing clothes.

Three years on, they have their own small weaving and sewing business, using a bicycle pedal-powered loom to weave a variety of woollen products including scarves, blankets, throws, wraps and other interior items.

After learning their story their tweed products became must-have additions in the refurbishment of the restaurant of The Bosvillewhich was completed in April 2015.
Provenance and quality are two of Skye Weavers guiding principles and they are passionate about the need to preserve the knowledge and quality associated with Scottish tweeds and garments, particularly with Scotland’s proud history of high quality textile-making.

We felt we shared just as much passion about food as Skye Weavers do about textiles, so now we hope you will enjoy the experience of the tactile indulgence of Skye Weavers tweed fabric and our traditional Scottish recipes served in a contemporary bistro dining setting.

Skye Weavers are only a 45 minute drive away from Portree if you would like to visit their workshop and see Andrea and Roger in their unique working environment. Combine a visit to Skye Weavers with a trip to the nearby iconic lighthouse at Neist Point and drop in for some lunch at the delightful Red Roof Cafe in Glendale.
